5b is proud to release a limited edition etching by Carole Gibbons, originally produced to raise funds for our publication on her work. Long overdue, this is the first monograph dedicated to Gibbons' oeuvre, and includes contributions by Lucy Stein and Andrew Cranston.

Carole Gibbons is one of the most distinctive and enchanting artists to have come out of Glasgow in the latter half of the 20th century. Her paintings burst with colour, hinting at narratives of both darkness and light. Rich in symbolism and narrative, the works fuse art-historical and mythological motifs with Gibbons' own lived experience, offering insights into a passionate and deeply-felt inner life.

Gibbons was born in Glasgow in 1935 and attended Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1957. Unlike many artists of that time, she chose not to train as a teacher, instead pursuing her own practice. Gibbons was the second-ever female artist to be shown at the Third Eye Centre in Glasgow (now the CCA), and the first living woman to have a solo exhibition there in 1975. Still groundbreaking and innovative, Gibbons' work has captured the attention of a new generation of artists, including painter Lucy Stein. In 2012, Stein showed her own work alongside Gibbons' in two exhibitions: one held during Glasgow International, and the other at Gimpel Fils, London. Recent exhibitions include From the Studio at House for an Art Lover, Glasgow, and Kupfer, London.

The edition was launched at the 2022 Artists' Bookmarket at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh.
