Dear Beast
29 November, 2025 – 24 January, 2026
43 Virginia Street, Glasgow

5b is honoured to present Dear Beast, an exhibition comprised of a single work – Cat in Greys (1958) – by Carole Gibbons. Gibbons completed the painting while studying at The Glasgow School of Art; reflecting upon her studies, Gibbons recalls feeling at odds with her tutors at the time, as well as the impact of first seeing reproductions of the work of Picasso. Notably, Cat in Greys is possessed of a muted palette reminiscent of her then-partner Alan Fletcher’s, who died tragically that same year. Beyond being a striking early example of her work, the painting attests to Gibbons’ long-standing exploration of the cat as muse. A new publication celebrating Gibbons’ devotion to the feline subject accompanies this presentation.

With very special thanks to Henry Gibbons Guy and David Caldwell.
